The Holy Grail of SEO

SEO or Search Engine Optimization has gotten such a bad rap because of the snake oil guys who go out and charge thousands for changing the titles of a page, and other crap like that. We’ll it’s good and it’s bad.
The bad part is that they damage the reputation of good, honest and effective seo practitioners. The Good part is that they don’t know what they are doing, and their methods are worthless, so it means we have inept competition, and that’s a good thing.
So, if what is known as “on page” seo, is the snake oil that IS being sold, and if it’s not effective, then what is? We’ll, first off, on-page seo is crucial, but in and of itself, it is not going to get any results.
The secret sauce of seo, what makes one site dominate the search engines as opposed to it’s competitors, is quality one way links, using the desired keywords the anchor text in a natural, and non-spammy way.
While heading up a Raleigh SEO company, I tell no fewer than 4 potential clients a week that the link strategy is the bedrock for search engine marketing success.
So, if one way link building is the secret sauce, what is the Holy Grail? (Bear in mind, the Holy Grail is in undoubtedly much, much more important than any secret sauce)Simple, the holy grail is knowing what keywords to use as your anchor text in those links.
Not just what to use, but in what combinations and in what amounts. You cannot use the same keyword for all of your anchor text. This will hurt more than help.
You need to use all of your keywords equally. That’s right, I said it. However, you need to be sure that you are picking keywords that will result in traffic. They way I do this is to use Google’s own keyword tool to uncover not only keywords, but also their approximate search counts.
Having this information and putting it into action, is the holy grail of seo, and it’s full of secret sauce as well.
